The narrow-gauge Hultsfred-Västervik railwayThe narrow gauge railway between Västervik and Hultsfred is the first Swedish railway that has been listed as a national heritage. The line is 71 km (44 miles) and the gauge is 891 mm (2'11''), which equals three old Swedish feet. This gauge used to be very common in southern Sweden.
The railway runs through a landscape that is very typical for Småland, through dark forests, along small lakes and through small villages. Here one can find peace and relaxation, far away from the everyday bustle. There are good possibilities to find accommodation, and the inn "Gröna Tuppen" ("The Green Rooster") in Fårhult can be recommended.
For the first time in over ten years, the narrow gauge service reached the town centre in Västervik in 2003, as the dual gauge track between Västervik and Jenny was reopened. Here, the railway runs together with the normal gauge railway from Västervik to Linköping for 2.5 miles. This is the only remaining dual gauge track in Sweden.
The service operates daily from June 27 to August 16, and Saturdays and Sundays from August 22 to August 23. Regular trains are operated by railcars from the 1950s. A steam train operates Saturdays and Sundays between Västervik and Ankarsrum and Wednesdays between Västervik and Verkebäck from July 8 to August 9. Throughout the year, there is a possibility to hire a train. For further information: E-mail
